Why this race belongs on a competitive runner's shortlist
Philadelphia suits runners seeking a city marathon with neighborhood variety and a river finish. The 2026 route visits University City and Fairmount Park before the Manayunk turnaround, with the Philadelphia Museum of Art beside the finish area. Those changes of setting make the long out-and-back easier to picture. The tradeoff is climbing through University City and Fairmount Park before the lower river roads, so treating the course as uniformly flat can cost you late.
Course overview
The 2026 course starts at 22nd Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway and finishes on Benjamin Franklin Parkway beside the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A city loop takes Arch Street to Columbus Boulevard, then reaches South Street, Walnut Street and University City. Fairmount Park follows, with the route crossing back toward the eastern park drives before the Schuylkill River out-and-back to Manayunk. Kelly Drive brings runners home. Most sustained hills come before the long river return. The current page retains a 2024 elevation chart, used here as a reference rather than a new survey.
0 to 10 km: Arch Street and the Delaware waterfront
Arch Street takes runners toward Columbus Boulevard before the South Street and 6th Street turns. The retained profile keeps these early roads lower than the park hills later on. Keep the city turns smooth and resist accelerating to recover seconds after each corner. The 2026 map places approximate water and DryWater stops near miles 2.3, 3.7 and 5.1. Use a familiar intake plan while the course is still comparatively easy.
10 to 21.1 km: University City and Fairmount Park
Walnut Street leads into University City before 34th Street and the Fairmount Park roads around Avenue of the Republic and Lansdowne Drive. The reference chart shows climbing around miles 7 to 8 and 9 to 11. Let the uphill splits slow without chasing them on the next descent. Approximate mapped fluid stops are near miles 7.1, 8.5, 10.2 and 11.8, with e-Gel past mile 10. Carry familiar fuel if the supplied gel does not fit your practiced plan.
21.1 to 32 km: eastern park drives to Manayunk
Reservoir and Edgley Drives precede Kelly Drive and Main Street in Manayunk. The retained chart drops around miles 15 to 16, then shows smaller river-road rolls. Keep the downhill stride short enough to avoid pounding tired legs. Approximate mapped water and DryWater stops are near miles 14.4, 16.2, 17.8, 18.9 and 19.8. The e-Gel point before mile 18 is useful only if that product and timing already work for you.
32 km to 42.2 km: Manayunk turnaround and Kelly Drive
The turnaround near Main and Cotton Streets sends runners back through Manayunk toward Kelly Drive and Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Smaller rolls remain, followed by a final rise into the finish area. Wait until after the turnaround before deciding to increase effort. Approximate mapped fluids are near miles 20.2, 21.3, 22.3 and 24.2, with e-Gel past mile 22. Continue planned drinks even when the river return feels like the final straight.
Elevation checkpoints and how to read them
FindMyMarathon reports 651 ft of modeled cumulative ascent, or 198.4 m, and 641 ft of descent, or 195.4 m, for its February 2026 course update. Its modeling method is not disclosed. The organizer retains a 2024 profile showing the University City and Fairmount Park hills, followed by the drop toward the river around miles 15 to 16. Treat both as planning references, not a certified 2026 elevation survey. The small modeled net rise of 3.0 m hides that repeated climbing.
Aid stations and race-day logistics
The 2026 map marks approximate fluid positions; the FAQ numeric station table still says 2025. Plan water or lemon-lime DryWater at the mapped stops, and e-Gel past mile 10, before mile 18 and past mile 22. Walk from Center City toward 22nd Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway, allowing time for security checkpoints opening at 05:00. SEPTA buses serving the Museum area need a race-day detour check. Tagged clear bags go to the south side of Eakins Oval; Sunday gear check runs 05:00 to 15:00.
Practical pacing plan
Control the early city pace so University City and Fairmount Park do not force a long recovery. Keep the lower Kelly Drive running economical rather than using it to repay every uphill second. After the Manayunk turnaround, increase effort only if breathing and stride remain steady. November wind or rain can raise the cost of the exposed river return, so adjust the split target before committing to that push.
Historical weather pattern
November weather history around Philadelphia shows typical daily temperatures of 32.4 to 64.4 F, daily mean winds of 4.2 to 11.0 mph, and at least 1 mm of rain on 27.0 percent of days. Conditions can change, so check the race-week forecast before travel and again on race morning.
