TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon

Toronto, Canada, CA

Why this race belongs on a competitive runner's shortlist

A downtown and waterfront road marathon through more than a dozen Toronto neighborhoods, with a Bay Street finish beside Nathan Phillips Square. The waterfront, Bloor to Yorkville and The Beach sections suit runners who want a large city race with identifiable neighborhoods; flyovers, repeated Eastern Avenue bridge crossings and a rising finish complicate the usual flat-course description. The 2026 full and half are sold out. It suits runners who want a large city marathon with distinctive neighborhoods.

Course overview

Road course with an opening Yonge to Bloor to Bathurst circuit, a westward Lake Shore out-and-back, and eastern Bayview/The Beach out-and-backs before returning to Bay Street. The start is Yonge Street north of Gerrard and the finish is Bay Street just north of Queen Street. The route takes in Yonge Street, Bloor Street, Bathurst Street, Lake Shore Boulevard West, Bayview Avenue, Eastern Avenue, The Beach, Bay Street. Generally low waterfront roads interrupted by Jameson and Spadina inclines, Eastern Avenue bridge ramps, and an uphill Bay Street finish.

0 to 10 km

The 0 to 10 km interval includes Yonge Street, Bloor Street, Bathurst Street, Lake Shore Boulevard, Jameson Avenue. The organizer identifies an incline on Lake Shore Boulevard just before Jameson Avenue; the 2026 map locates this on the outward western section before 10 km. Official map shows water/Organika at Bloor to Bedford around 3 km, Bathurst to Dundas around 5 km, and Lake Shore to Dan Leckie around 7 km, plus the waterfront station near 9 km. These kilometer positions are approximate map readings. Cross the Bathurst streetcar rails carefully and keep effort capped on the Jameson rise rather than accelerating to hold a rigid split.

10 to 21.1 km

The 10 to 21.1 km interval includes Lake Shore Boulevard at Ellis Avenue, Ontario Place, Spadina flyover, Bay Street. After the Ellis turnaround, runners recross the Jameson rise and then the steeper Spadina flyover incline/decline; Bay Street rises toward the eastbound turn near halfway. Water/Organika stations appear near 12 km at Colborne Lodge, around 15 km near British Columbia Drive, and around 18 km near Dan Leckie; Hornet energy is marked at the western turnaround station. Positions are approximate on the map. Use a practiced gel at the western turnaround if it fits the fueling schedule; accept a slower split over Spadina and the Bay Street rise.

21.1 to 32 km

The 21.1 to 32 km interval includes Front Street, Bayview Avenue, Corktown Common, Eastern Avenue, Lake Shore Boulevard East, Woodbine Avenue. The official course details identify a steeper incline and decline on Eastern Avenue over the Don Valley Parkway; the outbound crossing falls in this interval after the Bayview section. The interactive map names stations at Berczy Park, Front to Parliament, Bayview Extension, Eastern to Morse/Carlaw and Lake Shore to Coxwell; the PNG places hydration around 22, 26 to 28 and 30 km, with a Hornet point near 27 km. Distances are approximate map readings. Fuel before the eastern bridge work, hold effort through the ramps and leave room to handle the Queen Street turnaround without a surge.

32 to 42.195 km

The 32 to 42.195 km interval includes Queen Street East, Maclean Avenue, The Beach, Eastern Avenue, Bay Street. The return recrosses the Eastern Avenue/DVP incline and decline, followed by the gradual northbound Bay Street climb to the finish. Official 2026 map marks water/Organika in The Beach around 32 to 34 km, Lake Shore to Coxwell around 36 km, Eastern to Morse/Carlaw around 38 km and Front to Parliament around 40 to 41 km; a Hornet point is marked near the return Eastern/Corktown section. Keep enough reserve for the return bridge and final Bay Street rise; if the waterfront wind has stayed manageable, build a controlled push after the last major bridge rather than sprinting from The Beach.

Elevation checkpoints and how to read them

Total ascent is 138 m. Organizer-presented estimated cumulative rise. Verified in the cloud browser at 02:24 UTC on 2 October 2026: official event page links RacePoint; loaded page title says 2026 TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon Interactive Map; Marathon Elevations button reveals 138 m estimated cumulative rise. Underlying smoothing/DEM method not disclosed; call this an organizer-presented estimate, not surveyed ascent. Lake Shore rise before Jameson, Spadina flyover, Bay Street at the eastbound turn, Eastern Avenue crossing of the Don Valley Parkway in both directions, and final Bay Street incline.

Aid stations and race-day logistics

Drink-station spacing is approximate. About every 3 km; mapped names include Bloor to Bedford, Bathurst to Dundas, Lake Shore to Dan Leckie, Lake Shore to British Columbia, Lake Shore to Colborne Lodge, Berczy Park, Front to Parliament, Bayview Extension, Eastern to Morse/Carlaw, Lake Shore to Coxwell and Queen to Waverly: Water and Organika electrolytes; accessible toilets at water stations. Three Hornet symbols on official 2026 map: western turnaround, outbound Corktown/Eastern area and return Corktown/Eastern area: Hornet non-caffeinated energy gels. Exact kilometer numbers are not text-published; map positions remain approximate. The start is Yonge Street north of Gerrard, facing northbound. Sunday subway service starts 8 am, the same time as the race; organizer recommends Yonge and Bloor buses. Yonge bus diverts onto Church; westbound Bloor buses divert at Church from 7 am. South corral entry closes 9:25 am; start closes after walking corral at 9:31 am. Use assigned corral entry, since the weekend directions still describe the wider Elm to Queen staging corridor. Bay Street closes to east/west pedestrian crossing at 9 am from Lake Shore to Dundas; spectator crossings use Dundas or Union Station pedestrian bridge. Nathan Phillips Square south of the pool, 6 am to 3 pm Sunday. Bring your own bag no larger than 45×32×17 cm, attach bib tear-off tag, and show bib for collection. Race bib pickup is at Better Living Centre on 16 to 17 October; do not use older Enercare Centre instructions.

Practical pacing plan

Cross the Bathurst streetcar rails carefully and keep effort capped on the Jameson rise rather than accelerating to hold a rigid split. Use a practiced gel at the western turnaround if it fits the fueling schedule; accept a slower split over Spadina and the Bay Street rise. Fuel before the eastern bridge work, hold effort through the ramps and leave room to handle the Queen Street turnaround without a surge. Keep enough reserve for the return bridge and final Bay Street rise; if the waterfront wind has stayed manageable, build a controlled push after the last major bridge rather than sprinting from The Beach. Push only while effort and form remain controlled. Adjust pace for wind, rain and temperature on race day; the monthly historical sample is not a race-morning forecast.
