NN Marathon Rotterdam
Rotterdam, South Holland, NL
Why this race belongs on a competitive runner's shortlist
Rotterdam gives PB chasers a flat course with the atmosphere of a major city marathon. Its 2:03:36 course record shows the route's speed, while two Erasmus Bridge crossings, dense crowd support, and the final straight on Coolsingel keep the course recognizable. Bridge wind and early congestion are the main tradeoffs, so an even effort matters more than forcing the first crossing to match goal pace.
Course overview
Rotterdam starts on Schiedamsedijk and crosses Erasmus Bridge almost immediately. The course loops through Kop van Zuid, Feijenoord, and Ahoy, returns over Erasmus Bridge near 28 km, then circles Kralingse Plas before passing the Cube Houses and Markthal on the way to Coolsingel. The 64 m of modeled ascent comes mainly from the two bridge crossings and short late rises; the southern roads and lake section are otherwise level.
Kilometers 0 to 10
The race climbs Erasmus Bridge immediately, drops into Kop van Zuid, and then settles onto flatter southbound roads. Do not spend energy holding goal pace on the bridge. Water and AA Drink Iso-Lemon are available at 5 and 10 km, so take the first planned drink after the bridge when the field has begun to spread.
Kilometers 10 to 21.1
The southern loop passes Feijenoord Stadium and Ahoy on low, mostly level roads. Water and AA Drink Iso-Lemon are at 15 and 20 km, with banana at 20 km. Keep the fuel schedule tied to those stations and hold a steady effort through the turns, saving the legs for the second Erasmus Bridge crossing later in the race.
Kilometers 21.1 to 32
This section returns over Erasmus Bridge and approaches the modeled course high point of 17 m near 28.4 km. Water and isotonic drink at 25 and 30 km make this the place to complete the planned mid-race fuel before the bridge. Keep effort even over the rise, then regain pace after the descent into central Rotterdam.
Kilometers 32 to 42.2
Around Kralingse Plas the model reaches its -3 m low point near 33.9 km, then the course rises gently past the Cube Houses and Markthal toward Coolsingel. Upfront gel at 34 km and drink stations at 35 and 40 km support the final push. Take the gel only if practiced, then commit after the last station.
Elevation checkpoints and how to read them
The route model totals 64 m of ascent and 60 m of descent, with start and finish both near 8 m. The main race-specific changes are the two Erasmus Bridge crossings, the modeled 17 m high point near 28.4 km, and the -3 m low point near 33.9 km; outside those points, the profile is level enough for effort-led pacing.
Aid stations and race-day logistics
Water and AA Drink Iso-Lemon are at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 km. Bananas appear at 20 km, tea at 25 km, Upfront gel at 34 km, and sponge points at each 2.5 km midpoint from 12.5 through 37.5 km. The marathon starts on Schiedamsedijk between 10:00 and 10:40. Use Rotterdam Centraal, Beurs, or Blaak by train or metro; Leuvehaven and Stadhuis have race-day closures, and the start itself is closed to spectators.
Practical pacing plan
Hold back on the first Erasmus Bridge crossing rather than forcing goal pace into a climb or headwind. Use the flatter southern loop around Ahoy to establish effort, then cap the second Erasmus Bridge crossing near 28 km. Wind around Kralingse Plas can matter more than the 64 m total ascent, so protect effort there. Push after the final gentle rise, once the Cube Houses and Coolsingel are ahead.
Historical weather pattern
Historically, race-month temperatures in Rotterdam have ranged from about 37.8°F to 68°F, with winds around 6 to 13.4 mph and measurable precipitation on 72.6% of sampled days. Conditions can change, so check the race-week forecast before you travel and again before race morning.
