Why this race belongs on a competitive runner's shortlist

Amsterdam is a World Athletics Platinum Label race with one of the fastest courses in the world and 32,000 marathon places in 2026. It combines a deep field with detailed organizer material, including course maps, an elevation link, wave times, refreshment points, and an Olympic Stadium finish.

Course overview

The route starts near or inside the Olympic Stadium, passes the Rijksmuseum, follows the Amstel River, returns through the city, crosses Vondelpark twice, and finishes in the stadium. The organizer says the current course will remain for the coming years, which makes the guide more durable than most city-route summaries.

Miles 1 to 6

The stadium and city opening can be busy because two start areas feed the race. Settle into your assigned wave pace and avoid an early effort spike while the field sorts itself. The first 5 and 8 kilometer water points provide simple early checkpoints.

Miles 7 to 13

The route moves toward and along the Amstel. This section is scenic and flat, but it can be exposed to wind and includes turns along the river. Stations around 11, 16, 18, and 20 kilometers support a regular plan. Halfway should feel steady, not urgent.

Miles 14 to 20

The return from the river and the city loops place more emphasis on tangents and concentration. Keep effort stable through any bridge ramp and do not force pace into a headwind. Use the 25 and 30 kilometer timing points to decide whether goal pace still feels mechanically clean.

Miles 21 to 26.2

Vondelpark appears late and the stadium finish can feel close before it is. Hold rhythm through the park, then build effort after 37 to 38 kilometers. Save something for the entry into the Olympic Stadium, where turns and surface change can interrupt a final sprint.

Elevation checkpoints and how to read them

The organizer calls the course flat and links an official elevation view. The main practical changes are bridge ramps and mild river or park undulations. If a numeric table is published, use the current profile at 5-kilometer checkpoints and distinguish start-area differences rather than estimating from a generic map.

Aid stations and race-day logistics

The 2026 marathon starts at 9:00 on October 18 and has a six-hour limit. Waves run until roughly 9:43. The organizer lists water and product stations from 5 kilometers onward, including gel at 18 kilometers, and timing every 5 kilometers. Confirm the full station table and start-area assignment before race day.

Practical pacing plan

Stay calm through the merged start, hold even effort along the Amstel, and wait until Vondelpark to progress. Amsterdam's flatness makes small surges easy to hide, so the discipline is keeping every kilometer affordable until the final park section.
