Race context for 2026

Athens Marathon. The Authentic is scheduled for November 8, 2026, with an 8:30 a.m. start in Marathon and a finish inside the Panathenaic Stadium. Official registration is closed, so entrants should use organizer updates for transport, participant instructions, and any final race-week changes.

Course overview

This is a point-to-point marathon from Marathon to central Athens. The first ten kilometres mix gentle downhill running with a flat section. The course then climbs in stages through Pikermi, Pallini, Gerakas, and Stavros before a long descent toward Athens and the stadium finish.

Kilometres 0 to 10: settle before the climbing

The first 200 metres descend, and the opening four kilometres remain slightly downhill. Runners then loop around the Marathon Tomb area for about 2.2 kilometres. From kilometre 6 through Nea Makri at kilometre 10, the course is flat. Keep the easy opening from turning into an early time trial.

Kilometres 11 to 20: the first sustained work

The route climbs in parts from kilometres 11 to 17, followed by a steep descent before the Rafina intersection. From that junction, the road turns uphill again, with the strongest part continuing toward kilometre 20. Hold effort steady through both the climb and the sharp transition downhill.

Kilometres 21 to 31: Pikermi, Pallini, and Stavros

Through Pikermi, uphill and easier sections alternate until kilometre 25, including a prolonged rise near that point. Pallini brings more uphill running around kilometres 27 and 28. The course page identifies the extended climb at Stavros, around kilometres 30 and 31, as the final and hardest uphill section.

Kilometres 32 to 42.2: descend into Athens

A steep descent reaches Agia Paraskevi, followed by alternating flat and downhill roads through Chalandri and Cholargos. After the descent toward Katechaki near kilometre 37.5, runners pass the Concert Hall, War Museum, Presidential Palace, and National Garden. The last 170 metres are on the Panathenaic Stadium track.

Elevation and terrain

Athens rewards patience more than even splits. The course gives away elevation early, then asks for repeated climbing from the second quarter through kilometre 31. The long descent into Athens can punish tired legs if the uphill sections were run too hard. Plan by effort across each terrain change.

Supply stations and course support

The organizer lists 15 supply stations along the marathon route. Medical help is available at each station, ambulances and first-aid volunteers cover the course, and physiotherapists are stationed at kilometres 25 and 30. Toilets are placed at supply stations, with accessible toilets at kilometres 10, 20, 30, and 40.

Practical pacing strategy

Use the downhill opening to relax rather than bank time. Shorten the stride when the climbing begins after kilometre 10, and keep effort contained through Pikermi and Stavros. Start racing only after the hardest rise is behind you. On the descent, increase pace gradually while protecting the legs for the final city kilometres.
