Course overview
Road course with a downtown/Beacon Hill opening and an out-and-back through Oak Bay; returns via Dallas Road and James Bay. The start is Legislative Grounds and the finish is Legislative Grounds. The route takes in Downtown Victoria, Beacon Hill Park, Dallas Road, Oak Bay, Uplands, Dallas Road, James Bay. Low-altitude but repeatedly undulating; the total climbing is much larger than the difference between the highest and lowest points.
0 to 10 km
The 0 to 10 km interval includes Yates Street, Beacon Hill Park, Dallas Road, Clover Point. Organizer elevation profile shows the Beacon Hill section climbing to its early high point around 7 km, followed by descent toward Dallas Road/Clover Point before 10 km. Treat plotted positions as approximate. Water and XACT electrolytes at 5 and 9.5 km; carry a practiced carbohydrate option if needed before the first nutrition-bar station. Keep the climb through Beacon Hill controlled rather than trying to preserve downhill splits; use the 9.5 km drink before the next coastal rise.
10 to 21.1 km
The 10 to 21.1 km interval includes Richardson Street, Foul Bay Road, McNeill Avenue, Oak Bay, Beach Drive. Profile shows a rise toward Richardson/Foul Bay around 13 km and another rise on Beach Drive beside the golf club around 20 km, with lower sections between. Water/XACT at 12, 15 and 18.5 km. Station 3 also serves nutrition bars, but the page inconsistently labels its outward location 12 versus 13 km; do not promise an exact fuel kilometer there. Shorten stride on the Oak Bay rises and drink before the golf-club climb; do not accelerate merely because the route stays close to sea level.
21.1 to 32 km
The 21.1 to 32 km interval includes Beach Drive, Uplands Park, Loon Bay turnaround, Oak Bay, Gonzales Point. The elevation profile has small rises near Beach/Dorset around 23 km and on the return Beach Drive golf-club section around 30 km; the turnaround is at about 25 km. Water/XACT at 22, 25, 28 and 31 km; XACT fruit bars at station 7 at the 25 km turnaround. Use the turnaround as a fuel checkpoint, then hold effort on the return golf-club rise before considering a sustained push.
32 to 42.195 km
The 32 to 42.195 km interval includes McNeill Avenue, Foul Bay Road, Dallas Road, James Bay, Legislative Grounds. Profile shows McNeill/Foul Bay rising near 34 km, another climb toward Dallas/Douglas around 39 km, then a descent into the 40 km section before the final low-level approach. Water/XACT at 35, 37 and 40 km; station 3 provides fruit bars on the 35 km return visit. Reserve effort for the rise near Dallas/Douglas; a controlled increase makes more sense after that crest and descent toward James Bay than at 32 km.
Elevation checkpoints and how to read them
Total ascent is 234.696 m. Organizer-published cumulative gain of 770 feet, converted using 0.3048 m/ft. Public copy may say 234.7 m (770 ft). Do not substitute a modeled total. Organizer web page states min 3 m/max 25 m, while currently linked profile labels Douglas/Battery 27 m; avoid treating the maximum as settled. Beacon Hill rise near 7 km; Oak Bay undulations near 13/20/30/34 km; late Dallas/Douglas rise near 39 km and descent toward 40 km.

Practical pacing plan
Keep the climb through Beacon Hill controlled rather than trying to preserve downhill splits; use the 9.5 km drink before the next coastal rise. Shorten stride on the Oak Bay rises and drink before the golf-club climb; do not accelerate merely because the route stays close to sea level. Use the turnaround as a fuel checkpoint, then hold effort on the return golf-club rise before considering a sustained push. Reserve effort for the rise near Dallas/Douglas; a controlled increase makes more sense after that crest and descent toward James Bay than at 32 km. Push only while effort and form remain controlled. Adjust pace for wind, rain and temperature on race day; the monthly historical sample is not a race-morning forecast.
