Why this race belongs on a competitive runner's shortlist
A point-to-point road marathon linking Queen Elizabeth Park, Pacific Spirit Park, UBC, Spanish Banks and the Stanley Park Seawall with a downtown finish. It suits scenery-focused destination runners willing to manage real early hills; six hours overall and four hours for the first 30 km constrain slower pacing plans. It suits scenery-focused destination runners willing to manage early hills. The 2027 date is confirmed. Route and operation details below use the currently linked 2026 course reference and must be checked against the final 2027 guide.
Course overview
Point-to-point course, starting inland at Queen Elizabeth Park, looping through UBC and then following the shoreline into Stanley Park before the downtown finish. The start is Queen Elizabeth Park, Midlothian Avenue and the finish is West Pender Street between Bute and Thurlow. The route takes in Queen Elizabeth Park, Camosun Street, Pacific Spirit Park, UBC, Spanish Banks, Kitsilano, Burrard Bridge, Stanley Park Seawall. Early descending and climbing roads lead to the UBC high section, a large descent to Spanish Banks, the later Burrard Bridge crossing and a low waterfront finish section.
0 to 10 km
The 0 to 10 km interval includes Queen Elizabeth Park, Cambie Street, West 49 th Avenue, SW Marine Drive, Camosun Street. The official profile drops from the higher opening roads to the low SW Marine Drive section around 7 to 8 km, then climbs Camosun Street from roughly 9 km toward 11 km. 2026 map shows water and XACT electrolyte stations on West 49 th Avenue between 5 and 6 km and on Camosun Street around 9 km; positions are map-read approximations. Avoid overstriding on the early descent and use the Camosun drink opportunity before finishing the first major climb.
10 to 21.1 km
The 10 to 21.1 km interval includes Pacific Spirit Park, West 16 th Avenue, Blanca Street, UBC, NW Marine Drive. The profile remains on higher ground through Pacific Spirit Park and UBC before the sustained descent around 19 to 21 km toward Spanish Banks; the official half-distance point is Spanish Banks West. 2026 map shows XACT bars, electrolytes and water around 11 km; additional electrolyte/water stations around 14, 16 and 17 km. These are approximate map positions. Finish the Camosun rise at controlled effort; use the bar station near 11 km and save the quadriceps on the long UBC-to-beach descent.
21.1 to 32 km
The 21.1 to 32 km interval includes Spanish Banks, Point Grey Road, Kitsilano, Burrard Bridge, English Bay. The low beach section is interrupted by modest rises and the Burrard Bridge crossing around 29 to 30 km; the profile then descends toward English Bay. XACT bars/electrolytes/water appear around 21 to 22 km and 31 to 32 km, with electrolyte/water stations around 24 to 25, 28 and 29 km. All positions approximate from official 2026 map. Treat Burrard Bridge as an effort-controlled obstacle rather than a place to bank seconds; the English Bay bar station is a useful final top-up before the Seawall.
32 to 42.195 km
The 32 to 42.195 km interval includes Stanley Park Seawall, Second Beach, Brockton Point, Coal Harbour, West Pender Street. Official profile shows the Seawall remaining low and relatively level, followed by a rise after leaving the waterfront near 41 km toward West Pender Street. Water and XACT electrolytes are mapped around 33, 34, 36 to 37, 38 to 39 and 40 to 41 km; no additional XACT-bar icon is shown after the English Bay station. A controlled push is most realistic on the low Seawall if wind and effort allow; keep a small reserve for the exit rise into downtown.
Elevation checkpoints and how to read them
Total ascent is 251 m. Named modeled fallback: FindMyMarathon publishes 251 m ascent, 314 m descent and 4 to 103 m range, course updated 25 March 2026. Not an organizer-published total or confirmed 2027 calculation. The organizer-linked GPX has no ele elements and is internally named 2015, so it cannot supply a valid cumulative gain. Initial descent to SW Marine Drive, climb up Camosun around 9 to 11 km, descent from UBC to Spanish Banks around 19 to 21 km, Burrard Bridge around 29 to 30 km, slight final rise to West Pender.
Aid stations and race-day logistics
Drink-station spacing is approximate. Approximate map positions 5 to 6, 9, 11, 14, 16, 17, 21 to 22, 24 to 25, 28, 29, 31 to 32, 33, 34, 36 to 37, 38 to 39 and 40 to 41 km: Water and XACT electrolytes; the map uses station icons, not a meter-exact table. Approximate 11, 21 to 22 and 31 to 32 km: XACT energy bars in addition to hydration. The start is Queen Elizabeth Park at Midlothian Avenue and Clancy Loranger Way. Canada Line to Oakridge to 41 st or King Edward, then about 15 minutes on foot; the organizer recommends Oakridge to 41 st for marathon runners. The travel page warns that the half marathon closes northbound Cambie 6:45 to 8:15 am, complicating crossings from King Edward. It labels the Oakridge elevator outage as 2026; do not carry that outage into 2027. Passenger drop-off is Main Street near East 30 th Avenue. Arrive at least 45 minutes early and enter the corral color on the bib. Marathon bags must be checked at the Expo on Friday/Saturday, using the provided clear tagged bag. No gear check at the start. Retrieve after the finish with the race bib. Current info page lists Vancouver Convention Centre East, 999 Canada Place; TravelSmart retains 1055 Canada Place, so verify the final Expo venue address.
Practical pacing plan
Hold a sustainable effort. Avoid overstriding on the early descent and use the Camosun drink opportunity before finishing the first major climb. Finish the Camosun rise at controlled effort; use the bar station near 11 km and save the quadriceps on the long UBC-to-beach descent. Treat Burrard Bridge as an effort-controlled obstacle rather than a place to bank seconds; the English Bay bar station is a useful final top-up before the Seawall. A controlled push is most realistic on the low Seawall if wind and effort allow; keep a small reserve for the exit rise into downtown. Push only while effort and form remain controlled. Adjust pace for wind, rain and temperature on race day; the monthly historical sample is not a race-morning forecast.
