Sanlam Cape Town Marathon

Cape Town, Western Cape, ZA

Why this race belongs on a competitive runner's shortlist

Cape Town is aimed at destination runners who want the course itself to be part of the trip. Views of Table Mountain, Company Gardens, Long Street, and the Sea Point coast give the marathon a setting few city races can copy. Finishers in 2026 also receive a provisional Abbott World Marathon Majors star during the race's candidacy. More climbing, exposure, and weather risk make it a less predictable time trial than Valencia or Rotterdam.

Course overview

Cape Town uses Beach Road and Stadium Start waves that merge before the route climbs onto the elevated N2. It then runs south through Rondebosch Common, returns by Salt River and Woodstock, crosses the city through Company Gardens and Long Street, and reaches the Sea Point Promenade before the Vlei Road finish. The model totals 205 m of ascent, with scattered suburban rises and the largest climb from 30.7 to 32.1 km in Company Gardens.

Kilometers 0 to 10

Starting on Beach Road, the route leaves sea level and rises onto the elevated N2, with the city and Table Mountain visible around the 6.5 km off-ramp. The second hydration station sits just before that point. Drink there if planned, and cap effort on the ramp instead of chasing the opening split above the city.

Kilometers 10 to 21.1

The route passes Palmyra Road and Rondebosch Park from 15 to 17 km, then reaches Rondebosch Common around 20 km. Small suburban rises accumulate even though no single climb dominates. Hydration remains about every 3 km, with an elite fuel table at 15.5 km and a public hydration point just after halfway; carry personal fuel if needed.

Kilometers 21.1 to 32

After Rondebosch Common, the course runs through Salt River Circle and past Woodstock Station, then reaches the Castle of Good Hope near 30 km. The longest and steepest climb begins at 30.7 km in Company Gardens. With hydration about every 3 km, finish the planned fuel before the garden climb and pace it by effort, not watch speed.

Kilometers 32 to 42.2

Long Street drops from 32.1 to 33.3 km, followed by Green Point Main Road and the exposed Sea Point Promenade out-and-back from 36.3 to 41.4 km. Let the descent restore rhythm without overstriding. The final hydration point is near 39 km; take only the practiced amount, then turn back toward the Vlei Road finish.

Elevation checkpoints and how to read them

The May 2026 route model totals 205 m of ascent and 203 m of descent, ranging from about 6 m to 41 m above sea level. Most climbing is spread across small urban rises, but the decisive section is exact: the longest and steepest climb runs through Company Gardens from 30.7 to 32.1 km, followed immediately by the Long Street descent to 33.3 km.

Aid stations and race-day logistics

The organizer confirms 15 hydration stations approximately every 3 km. Thirteen serve water, Coke, Coke No Sugar, and Powerade, while two are water-only; exact kilometer positions are not published in the current FAQ. Your bib assigns either the Stadium Start on Fritz Sonnenberg Road or the Beach Road Start in Mouille Point. Use the official CTICC or Civic Centre shuttle, the special train to Cape Town Station, or a marked walking route. The V&A Waterfront shuttle does not serve the Sunday start.

Practical pacing plan

Hold back on the N2 ramp after the Stadium or Beach Road starts and let the fields merge without a surge. Keep effort even through Rondebosch, with enough reserve for the Company Gardens climb from 30.7 to 32.1 km. Use the Long Street descent to restore rhythm, not to sprint. Heat or wind on the Sea Point Promenade should lower the target pace. Push only after the turn back toward Vlei Road.

Historical weather pattern

Historically, race-month temperatures in Cape Town have ranged from about 50.7°F to 77.5°F, with winds around 6 to 12.4 mph and measurable precipitation on 39.9% of sampled days. Conditions can change, so check the race-week forecast before you travel and again before race morning.
