Why this race belongs on a competitive runner's shortlist
Boston suits experienced marathon runners who want a point-to-point race with a long competitive history. The B.A.A. dates the event to 1897, and its official map puts Heartbreak Hill before the Boylston Street finish. Those landmarks shape the race as much as its net downhill direction. The opening descent can damage tired legs long before the Newton climbs arrive. April 19, 2027 is confirmed, while the currently linked detailed map and participant guidance still describe 2026.
Course overview
The 42.195 km point-to-point course begins on Main Street in Hopkinton and ends on Boylston Street near Copley Square. Route 135 leads through Ashland, Framingham and Natick to Wellesley. Route 16 continues to Newton Lower Falls before Commonwealth Avenue carries runners over the Newton hills. The course then follows Beacon Street through Brookline and Kenmore Square, turns onto Hereford Street and reaches Boylston Street. The opening loses height, but the largest late effort change comes in Newton.
0 to 10 km: Hopkinton through Ashland
Main Street in Hopkinton feeds Route 135 through Ashland toward Framingham. The official profile shows the opening descent continuing through the early miles before smaller changes near the 10 km mark. Use a short, comfortable stride rather than chasing a fast downhill split. Water and Gatorade begin at mile 2 according to the current amenities page, with every-mile spacing shown on the 2026 map. Plan the first drink around that availability rather than the gun.
10 to 21.1 km: Framingham, Natick and Wellesley
Pass the Framingham train depot, follow West Central Street through Natick and approach Wellesley College before halfway. The profile is less steep than the opening, with small rolls and a rise around Wellesley. Let the louder crowd change your mood without changing your planned effort. The published Maurten depot at mile 11.8 has caffeinated and non-caffeinated gels. Use it only if that product and timing fit your practiced fueling plan; water and Gatorade continue along the road.
21.1 to 34 km: Wellesley to the Newton hills
The drop toward Newton Lower Falls precedes the turn onto Commonwealth Avenue and the series of Newton rises. Ladder 2 marks the hill section at mile 17.1; the official map puts Heartbreak Hill's crest at mile 20.8. Hold effort on each climb and allow pace to slow. The mile 17 Maurten station gives a specific fuel opportunity before the final hill. Keep your drink approach calm so a crowded table does not become an extra surge.
34 km to 42.2 km: Boston College to Boylston Street
After Boston College, the route drops toward Brookline, follows Beacon Street through Kenmore Square and turns right onto Hereford Street before the left onto Boylston Street. This descent comes on fatigued legs, so increase effort gradually rather than letting gravity force a longer stride. The final published Maurten depot is at mile 21.5, just after Boston College. Use the later water stations as planned, then concentrate on the two finish turns instead of the watch's instant pace.
Elevation checkpoints and how to read them
RoutePrinter reports 248 m of modeled cumulative ascent for its stored April 2026 route. That is a reference estimate, not a B.A.A. total or a 2027 elevation survey; the model's distance trace also differs from the certified race distance. The official profile shows why net downhill does not mean easy. Early descent loads the legs, then the Newton climbs culminate at Heartbreak Hill near mile 20.8 before the drop toward Brookline and Boston.
Aid stations and race-day logistics
The current course page lists water and Gatorade beginning at mile 2 and Maurten gels at miles 11.8, 17 and 21.5. The 2026 map shows every-mile drink spacing. For the Hopkinton start, the retained 2026 guidance recommends official buses from Charles Street by Boston Common, with a bib required. Gear is checked in Boston; bags are not transported from Hopkinton to the finish. Use those as historical planning references and confirm your 2027 bus assignment and gear instructions when the new guide appears.
Practical pacing plan
Control the descent through Ashland so the first fast miles do not spend the strength you need in Newton. Hold effort across Commonwealth Avenue's climbs and assess your legs after Heartbreak Hill before you increase the pace toward Brookline. Leave a final push for Hereford Street and Boylston Street if your stride still feels stable. Warm weather or wind on the point-to-point course can make a normal split too costly; judge effort before trying to recover time.
Historical weather pattern
April weather history around Boston shows typical daily temperatures of 36.7 to 61.4 F, daily mean winds of 5.6 to 14.3 mph, and at least 1 mm of rain on 41.0 percent of days. Conditions can change, so check the race-week forecast before travel and again on race morning.
