Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon

A sold-out race from Minneapolis to Saint Paul
The Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon is a World Athletics Label road race and the 2026 public field sold out. The point-to-point course starts in Minneapolis and finishes at the Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul. Its city-to-city route makes transportation and gear planning part of the race plan.
Lakes and river roads lead into Saint Paul
The official course materials route runners through Minneapolis, around city lakes, across the Mississippi, and into Saint Paul for the Capitol finish. The scenery changes often, but the racing problem is consistent: keep the early urban miles economical and retain enough strength for the later grades before the final descent.
Minneapolis miles: settle before the course narrows
Use the opening downtown and lake miles to settle near goal effort. Crowds and cool air can make the first 10 km feel easier than it is. Avoid weaving for small gains, take fluids without abrupt stops, and let the field open before making any decision to increase pace.
Saint Paul miles: save strength for the late grades
The later Saint Paul section rewards patience. Hold effort steady when the road rises and wait for the downhill approach past the cathedral toward the Capitol before letting pace increase. Runners who chase time too early may reach this section without the leg strength needed to use the finish terrain.
Train for rolling roads and a late climb
This is not a flat downtown loop. Prepare with long runs that include rolling roads and a sustained climb late in the session. Practice keeping breathing stable when pace slows uphill, then returning to rhythm without sprinting the crest. That skill matters more than forcing identical splits across the course.
Fourteen fluid stations shape the fueling plan
The participant guide lists water, Nuun Endurance, and toilets at all 14 fluid stations. Pure Fuel is planned near mile 18.6, and medical support begins near mile 2.5 and appears more often later. Practice with the listed products, but confirm final placement in the current runner guide.
Early October usually starts cool, but swings are real
The October 4 climate normal is about 46 F for the low and 65 F for the high. Historical extremes are much wider. Use the normal range to pack layers, not to predict race morning. Wind, rain, or unusual warmth should change pacing and hydration decisions once the current forecast is available.
