## Why this race belongs on a competitive runner's shortlist

Vienna suits PB chasers who want a capital-city marathon with landmarks across the full route. The organizer says fast times are possible and lists only 44 m between the course's lowest and highest points. Reichsbrucke, Schonbrunn, the Prater, Ringstrasse, and the Rathausplatz finish keep each phase distinct. The gradual middle climb and late rise out of the Prater still punish runners who treat the profile as uniformly flat.

## Course overview

Vienna starts on Wagramer Strasse beside Reichsbrucke, crosses the Danube, and drops into the Prater before turning toward the State Opera. The course runs west to Schonbrunn, returns through Mariahilfer Strasse and MuseumsQuartier, follows the Danube Canal back toward Prater Hauptallee, and finishes at Rathausplatz. The GPX totals 148 m of ascent, with the largest climbing block between 10 km and halfway and another rise after the late Prater low point.

## Kilometers 0 to 10

The start crosses Reichsbrucke, drops toward the Prater, and runs toward the Vienna State Opera. The GPX records about 35 m up and 30 m down in this section. Water is at 3.9 and 7.4 km, with water and Powerade at 4.8 and 9.5 km. Let the bridge affect pace, then establish rhythm after the descent.

## Kilometers 10 to 21.1

The route reaches Schönbrunn, returns along Mariahilfer Strasse, and approaches MuseumsQuartier. This is the biggest climbing block, with about 54 m up and 39 m down and the course high near 203 m. Water, Powerade, and banana are at 15 and 19.6 km, with refill points between; take fuel before the high point and hold effort on the rise.

## Kilometers 21.1 to 32

Past Rossauer Lande and the Danube Canal, the course turns toward Ernst Happel Stadium and Prater Hauptallee. The GPX drops about 43 m while adding only 22 m of ascent, reaching the 158 m low point. Full stations are at 24.8 and 29.4 km, with several water points between; fuel at the full stations and use the descent without overstriding.

## Kilometers 32 to 42.2

Prater Hauptallee leads back to Ringstrasse and Rathausplatz. The final section climbs about 36 m and descends 19 m, so it is not flat after the course low. ESN gel is at 33.5 km, full stations are at 34 and 39.6 km, and water is available later. Take fuel early in the section and reserve the final increase for Ringstrasse.

## Elevation checkpoints and how to read them

The organizer GPX calculates to 148 m of ascent and 137 m of descent, with a net rise of about 10 m; the organizer describes a 44 m gap between the course low and high points. The largest concentration comes from 10 to 21.1 km, where the route gains about 54 m toward the Schönbrunn and Mariahilfer section before dropping through the next 11 km.

## Aid stations and race-day logistics

Water or refill points are at 3.9, 7.4, 26.1, 27.2, 28.5, 31.4, 37.7, 38.6, and 40.8 km. Full stations are at 4.8, 9.5, 15, 19.6, 24.8, 29.4, 34, and 39.6 km, and ESN Hydro Energy Gel is at 33.5 km. The Wagramer Strasse start is reached by the U1 subway to Alte Donau. The 2026 bib works as a public-transport ticket from two hours before until six hours after the assigned start.

## Practical pacing plan

Hold back over Reichsbrucke and let the descent into the Prater establish pace. Keep effort capped on the biggest climbing block toward Schönbrunn and Mariahilfer Strasse, then use the drop toward the Danube Canal without overstriding. Wind on the bridge or long Prater straights, and warm sun on exposed avenues, should govern effort. Protect the late rise out of Prater Hauptallee. Push once Ringstrasse and Rathausplatz are close.

## Historical weather pattern

Historically, race-month temperatures in Vienna have ranged from about 32.2°F to 74.8°F, with winds around 4.7 to 10.1 mph and measurable precipitation on 53.2% of sampled days. Conditions can change, so check the race-week forecast before you travel and again before race morning.
