## Why this race belongs on a competitive runner's shortlist

Sydney suits runners seeking a World Marathon Major with a Sydney Harbour Bridge crossing and a Sydney Opera House finish. Centennial Park and the Royal Botanic Garden approach give the route a different setting from a repeated downtown loop. The tradeoff is 313 m of organizer-published climbing despite an 83 m net drop. This guide uses the retained 2026 course and start arrangements as a reference; the current page advertises August 29, 2027, but final next-edition group instructions still need checking.

## Course overview

The 2026 point-to-point route starts on Miller Street, North Sydney and finishes at the Sydney Opera House. It crosses Sydney Harbour Bridge, descends toward Pyrmont, returns along Hickson Road and climbs through Macquarie Street and Oxford Street. Flinders Street leads toward Anzac Parade and the southern turnaround before Centennial Park and Moore Park. The Royal Botanic Garden and Mrs Macquarie's Chair precede the Opera House approach. The broad pattern is an early descent interrupted by the bridge, a middle city climb and smaller park rolls before the low finish.

## 0 to 10 km: Harbour Bridge and Pyrmont

Miller Street descends toward Sydney Harbour Bridge, whose deck interrupts the downhill opening with a rise. The road then drops toward Pyrmont before returning along Hickson Road. Let the descent help the split without forcing a long stride, and accept a slower bridge split at the same effort. The map shows water and Powerade in Pyrmont around 6 km and near Hickson Road around 9 to 10 km. Those positions are approximate, so use the final guide for exact station timing.

## 10 to 20 km: Macquarie, Oxford and Anzac Parade

Macquarie Street and Oxford Street contain the main city rise before Flinders Street drops toward Anzac Parade and Moore Park. Shorten the uphill stride rather than preserving the same split through the climb. Water and Powerade are mapped near the William Street approach around 14 km, with water near Moore Park around 18 km. These are approximate positions read from the 2026 map. Take carried fuel on your practiced schedule instead of assuming the first on-course gel will arrive before 20 km.

## 20 to 32 km: Kingsford turnaround and Centennial Park

Anzac Parade reaches the Kingsford turnaround before the route returns toward Dacey Avenue and Centennial Park. The profile shows smaller rolls here, with a rise around Driver Avenue and park undulations rather than another sustained city climb. Keep turnarounds economical and maintain the practiced intake. GU, water and Powerade are mapped near 20 km and the Centennial Park approach near 31 km, with water and Powerade around 25 km. Treat those locations as approximate until the final station schedule is issued.

## 32 km to 42.2 km: Moore Park and the garden finish

Moore Park and Flinders Street lead back toward the Royal Botanic Garden, with the Mrs Macquarie's Chair loop before the Sydney Opera House finish. The profile still has a Moore Park rise and smaller garden undulations. Keep effort controlled until those rolls are behind you, then increase gradually on the final approach. The map shows GU, water and Powerade near 35 km and water with Powerade near 39 km. These are approximate map positions, not exact measured station distances.

## Elevation checkpoints and how to read them

The organizer publishes 313 m of cumulative ascent and an 83 m net drop beside the retained 2026 course map. Its calculation method is not stated. The early descent includes the Harbour Bridge rise, while Macquarie and Oxford Streets contain the main city climb. Driver Avenue, Centennial Park and Moore Park add later rolls before the low Opera House finish. The linked GPX uses a different altitude trace, so its endpoints are not substituted for those published totals.

## Aid stations and race-day logistics

The 2026 map distinguishes water-only stations from water with Powerade, and marks GU points around 20, 31 and 35 km. These map distances are approximate; use the final guide for exact positions. The retained transport plan sends Purple and Orange groups to North Sydney station or Victoria Cross metro and Walker Street. Green group uses Crows Nest metro, then Clarke, Burlington and Falcon Streets. Closures affect buses and driving. Follow your assigned assembly window and confirm the next-edition group instructions before travel.

## Practical pacing plan

Control effort across Harbour Bridge and avoid turning the Pyrmont descent into banked time. Conserve through Macquarie and Oxford Streets, then keep Anzac Parade steady enough to fuel without rushing. The Moore Park rise is a useful final check before you increase toward the gardens. August wind, rain or unusual warmth can make the bridge and open southern roads costlier; lower the split target before breathing forces a larger correction.

## Historical weather pattern

August weather history around Sydney shows typical daily temperatures of 42.0 to 71.6 F, daily mean winds of 3.7 to 10.1 mph, and at least 1 mm of rain on 23.2 percent of days. Conditions can change, so check the race-week forecast before travel and again on race morning.
