## Why this race belongs on a competitive runner's shortlist

Budapest suits runners who want a capital-city marathon with river scenery. Buda Lower Quay and Chain Bridge give the opening loop its Danube setting before the race extends north through Árpád Bridge and Margitsziget. The start and finish are on Pázmány Péter Promenade. The tradeoff is repeated bridge and quay ramps, with wind exposure along both riverbanks; the modeled 190 m ascent must not be read as an organizer-survey measurement.

## Course overview

Two unequal road loops along the Danube, with repeated bridge crossings and a northern island circuit. The start is Pázmány Péter Promenade, ELTE Buda Campus and the finish is Pázmány Péter Promenade. The route takes in Buda Lower Quay, Attila Road, Chain Bridge, Andrássy Avenue, Liberty Bridge, Árpád Bridge, Margitsziget, Liberty Bridge. Low riverside roads alternate with quay ramps and bridge rises on the 2026 route; these changes make effort more useful than a perfectly even split.

## Kilometers 0 to 10

The 0 to 10 km interval includes Buda Lower Quay, Attilaút, Chain Bridge, Andrássy Avenue. The official route climbs the Döbrentei Square quay ramp and Chain Bridge approach. The model rises from about 103 m to 130 m between 3 and 5 km; its 142 m peak is an uncertain digital estimate, not a survey. Water at 4.1 km on Attila Road; the 7.8 km Andrássy Avenue station adds isotonic drink, bananas, glucose and lemons. Conserve effort on the first quay ramp and Chain Bridge approach, then settle into the Andrássy Avenue section.

## Kilometers 10 to 21.0975

The 10 to 21.0975 km interval includes Pest Lower Quay, Liberty Bridge, Pázmány Péter Promenade, Friedrich Born Quay. Liberty Bridge comes around 12 km before more quay ramps. The model places the 10 to 21 km section mostly 97 to 113 m, with small climbs rather than a sustained hill. Water and isotonic drink with fruit and glucose at 11.3 km Mahart Terminal,14.5 km Pázmány Promenade and 18.6 km Friedrich Born Quay. Hold steady when passing the start area again; use the southern stations before the longer northern loop.

## Kilometers 21.0975 to 32

The 21.0975 to 32 km interval includes Árpád fejedelem avenue, Árpád Bridge, Margitsziget, Duna Aréna. The official map crosses Árpád Bridge around 25 km and again near 29 km. The model drops about 10 m between 25 and 26 km before an 8 m rise between 27 and 28 km; watch the ramps rather than forcing these modeled splits. Full drink and food stations at 22.7 km and 28.3 km on Margitsziget; water at 24.1 km. The 31.8 km Duna Aréna point adds Pepsi and mineral offerings. Cap effort on Árpád Bridge and the island ramps; take planned fuel before leaving Margitsziget.

## Kilometers 32 to 42.195

The 32 to 42.195 km interval includes Jászai Mari Square, Pest Lower Quay, Liberty Bridge, Műegyetem Quay. The route returns between quay and street level and crosses Liberty Bridge again around 40 km. Modeled altitudes are mostly 100 to 111 m in this final interval. Full aid with water, food and Pepsi at 34.9 km Jászai Mari Square and 39.3 km Mahart; water at 40.9 km on Műegyetem Quay. Save enough for the last Liberty Bridge crossing, then push gradually along the Buda-bank approach to the finish.

## Elevation checkpoints and how to read them

Total ascent is 190 m. Go&Race models 190 m ascent and 183 m descent for its 2026 route analysis, with downloadable GPX and per-kilometer altimetry. It is not an organizer-published total. DEM and trace quantization can misread bridge decks and the Castle Hill tunnel approach; retain the modeled label and avoid treating individual peaks as surveyed heights. Early Attila Road and Chain Bridge approaches; later quay ramps and repeated Árpád Bridge and Liberty Bridge crossings.

## Aid stations and race-day logistics

4.1/7.8/11.3/14.5/18.6/22.7/24.1/28.3/31.8/34.9/39.3/40.9 km: Water at all listed stations. Full stations add isotonic drink, bananas, glucose and lemons;4.1, 24.1 and 40.9 km are water-only. The official table lists extra items at selected late stations. The start is Pázmány Péter Promenade, ELTE Buda Campus. Tram 4 or 6 to Petőfi híd budai hídfő, then walk approximately 600 m along Pázmány Péter Promenade. For arrivals at Keleti railway station, the organizer lists Metro M4 to Móricz Zsigmond körtér, then tram 4; nearby parking is limited. Magyar Tudósok körútja bag tents operate 07:00 to 15:30. One bag up to 60×40×30 cm, tagged with the bib coupon; drop it by 08:45.

## Practical pacing plan

Conserve effort on the first quay ramp and Chain Bridge approach, then settle into the Andrássy Avenue section. Hold steady when passing the start area again; use the southern stations before the longer northern loop. Cap effort on Árpád Bridge and the island ramps; take planned fuel before leaving Margitsziget. Save enough for the last Liberty Bridge crossing, then push gradually along the Buda-bank approach to the finish. Wind along the exposed Danube quays can change effort even where altitude barely changes. Rain affects ramp grip; adapt the closing effort to the race-week forecast.

## Historical weather pattern

October history for Budapest, Hungary gives a typical daily temperature range of 36.9 to 72.2 degrees Fahrenheit, daily maximum sustained winds of 5.1 to 14.5 mph, and at least 1 mm of rain on 26.5 percent of days. Historical conditions can change, so check the race-week forecast before travel and again on race morning.
