## Why this race belongs on a competitive runner's shortlist

Passes near seven UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites. Katsura River and Arashiyama scenery, Kyoto Botanical Gardens and Heian-jingu Shrine finish. First-half undulations, a late Imadegawa-dori rise and unpaved riverbank sections complicate a flat-course PB plan. It suits runners who want a competitive city marathon with temple and river scenery. The 2027 event date and course map are current. Detailed aid and operations use the 2026 guide;155 m cumulative ascent is a named 2025 model, not an organizer-published 2027 total. The course includes Katsura River / Arashiyama and Hirosawa-no-ike Pond.

## Course overview

Point-to-point circuit through western and northern Kyoto, followed by riverbank running and central-city out-and-backs The start is TAKEBISHI Stadium Kyoto, Nishikyogoku Athletic Park and the finish is In front of Heian-jingu Shrine. The route takes in Katsura River / Arashiyama, Hirosawa-no-ike Pond, Kinukake-no-michi Road, Imamiya-jinja Shrine, Kyoto Botanical Gardens, Kamo River, Kyoto City Hall, Imadegawa-dori / Heian-jingu Shrine. First-half climbing and rollers through Arashiyama and northern temple roads; gentler riverbank descent later, then a late rise toward the Ginkaku-ji turnaround

## 0 to 10 km: Katsura River and Arashiyama

The 0 to 10 km interval includes TAKEBISHI Stadium Kyoto, Shijo-dori Street, Fushihara-tsutsumi dike, Arashiyama, Hirosawa-no-ike Pond. Official 2027 profile starts near 25 m, is comparatively level beside the Katsura River, then rises and dips beyond Arashiyama; the approach to 10 km climbs toward roughly 75 m. Approximate chart readings, not interval ascent totals. 2026 reference: water/sports drink at 4.5 km Fushihara-zutsumi; water only at 7.9 km west of Hirosawa Pond. Use the first station before the hillier roads and carry early carbohydrate if needed; no official food in this interval. Do not make up opening congestion on the initial flats; shorten the stride as Arashiyama-to-Hirosawa climbing starts.

## 10 to 21.1 km: Temple-road rollers and northern Kyoto

The 10 to 21.1 km interval includes Ninna-ji Temple, Kinukake-no-michi Road, Ryoan-ji Temple, Imamiya-jinja Shrine, Nishigamo-bashi Bridge, Kamigamo-jinja Shrine. Official 2027 profile repeatedly undulates around 70 to 100 m through northern temple roads, with its highest area around 15 to 17 km, then declines toward halfway. Approximate chart reading. 2026 reference: water/sports drink at 10.6, 15.3, 20.6 km; water at 12.5, 17.6 km. Food starts at 15.3 km with bananas and plum salt tablets; 17.6 km had rice crackers, seaweed and matcha biscuits; 20.6 km had strawberries, tomatoes and senbei. Let pace vary through the Ninna-ji and Imamiya rollers; 15.3 km is a concrete fueling point before the highest section instead of chasing a fast half split.

## 21.1 to 32 km: Kitayama, Botanical Gardens and Kamo River

The 21.1 to 32 km interval includes Kitayama-dori Street, Shimogamo-hon-dori Street, Kyoto Botanical Gardens, Kamo River riverbank, Shimogamo-jinja Shrine. Official 2027 profile trends down from roughly 70 to 80 m around halfway to 45 to 50 m by 32 km, with smaller ripples. The official guide marks unpaved riverbank and narrowing near the river entry. 2026 reference: water plus food at 23.1 km; water/sports drink, roasted-green-tea Kyobaum cake and Ramune candy at 26.5 km; water, bananas and senbei at 29.5 km. Keep intake going before narrower riverbank running. Regain rhythm on the gentler descending trend without surging around turns or overtaking aggressively on narrow riverbank; wet unpaved sections justify conservative footing.

## 32 to 42.195 km: City Hall and the final Imadegawa rise

The 32 to 42.195 km interval includes Kyoto Imperial Palace, Marutamachi-dori Street, Kyoto City Hall, Imadegawa-dori Street, Kyoto University, Ginkaku-ji turnaround, Heian-jingu Shrine. Official 2027 profile stays near 40 to 50 m through central-city running, climbs to roughly 70 to 75 m approaching the Ginkaku-ji-area turnaround around 39 km, then drops toward finish. Approximate chart readings. 2026 reference: water/sports drink and tomatoes or crackers at 32.2 km; water at 35.1 km City Hall plaza; water/sports drink and Kyobaum cake at 37.2 km; water at 40.8 km. Use 37.2 km before the late rise if it fits practiced timing. Preserve effort through City Hall turns and Imadegawa climbing; a controlled push is more defensible after the late turnaround when the profile descends toward Heian-jingu.

## Elevation checkpoints and how to read them

Total ascent is 155 m. Go&Race modeled route-analysis estimate for 2025 reference route, not organizer cumulative total or a new 2027 measurement. Page embeds 721 route/elevation points and uses a centered 9-point moving mean (edge-clipped, rounded to 0.1 m) before summing consecutive positive/negative differences. Reproducing its page JavaScript yields 154.8 m ascent/128.6 m descent, displayed 155 m/129 m. Source warns terrain/Google-API elevation can miss tunnels/viaducts. Official 2025/2027 maps visually compared: same coarse layout and named feature sequence; certified meter-for-meter identity not independently proved. Climbing after Arashiyama around 6 km and on approach to 10 km Repeated northern temple-road rises 10 to 20 km, profile highest around 15 to 17 km Gentler descending tendency through Botanical Gardens/Kamo River toward 32 km Late Imadegawa rise toward turnaround around 39 km followed by descent toward Heian-jingu

## Aid stations and race-day logistics

2026:4.5, 10.6, 15.3, 20.6, 26.5, 32.2, 37.2 km: Water/sports drink; food also 15.3, 20.6, 26.5, 32.2, 37.2 km. Segment records give examples. 2026:7.9, 12.5, 17.6, 23.1, 29.5, 35.1, 40.8 km: Water; food also 17.6, 23.1, 29.5 km. Quantities limited, organizer advises carrying gels as needed. The start is TAKEBISHI Stadium Kyoto in Nishikyogoku Athletic Park. 2026 official route from JR Kyoto: Karasuma subway to Shijo, about 5 minutes walk to Hankyu Karasuma, train to Nishikyogoku, then about 6 minutes walk to Starting Area. 2026 alternative pre-purchased temporary direct city bus from JR Kyoto Station, about 15 to 20 minutes; confirm 2027 service before booking. 2026 start blocks admitted 8:00 to 8:44; all runners had to reach designated blocks by 8:44. Current 2027 final instructions remain unverified. 2026: designated bib-numbered baggage truck 6:50 to 8:15 using provided bag; bags transported to finish and unavailable before race ends. These are not confirmed 2027 operating hours.

## Practical pacing plan

Hold a sustainable effort. Protect effort from Katsura River flats into Arashiyama/Hirosawa rises; a fast opening spends energy before northern rollers. Check effort at TAKEBISHI Stadium Kyoto. Allow pace variation through Kinukake-no-michi and Imamiya-jinja, then recover rhythm on gentler Kamo River descent while watching narrow unpaved footing. Keep reserve for Imadegawa-dori toward Ginkaku-ji; controlled push after the turnaround/downhill return if form remains sound. Push only while effort and form remain controlled. Use Heian-jingu Shrine as the closing landmark. Wind changes effort on the open Kamo River bank, and rain makes unpaved footing less secure. February temperatures vary; check the race-week forecast before choosing clothing and pacing adjustments.

## Historical weather pattern

February history for Kyoto, Japan gives a typical daily temperature range of 30.5 to 58.8 degrees Fahrenheit, daily maximum sustained winds of 5.5 to 14.2 mph, and at least 1 mm of rain on 34.6 percent of days. Historical conditions can change, so check the race-week forecast before travel and again on race morning.
