## Why this race belongs on a competitive runner's shortlist

Hamburg works for spring PB chasers who also want a full city tour. The course record is 2:03:46, yet the route still reaches the Reeperbahn, harbor, Elbphilharmonie, Speicherstadt, and the Alster lakes, with crowd support spread across the course. Small rollers and wind along the Elbe and Alster make the profile more varied than a perfectly flat time trial, so the best results come from controlled effort.

## Course overview

Hamburg starts near Karolinenstrasse and makes a long clockwise tour before returning to the Hamburg Messe finish area. The route reaches the Reeperbahn and Elbchaussee first, drops through the Fish Market and harbor, passes Elbphilharmonie and Speicherstadt, crosses Kennedy Bridge, then loops around the Alster lakes and northern neighborhoods before Dammtor. The organizer GPX totals 196 m of ascent, with short rollers spread across every quarter of the course.

## Kilometers 0 to 10

From Karolinenstrasse, the course reaches the Reeperbahn, Dancing Towers, and Elbchaussee. The organizer GPX records about 53 m up and 53 m down here, including the 39 m course high point. Use water and ESN drink at 5 km, water at 7.5 km, and the 10 km banana only if rehearsed; cap effort on the early rises.

## Kilometers 10 to 21.1

The route passes the Fish Market, Landungsbrucken, Elbphilharmonie, Speicherstadt, and Kennedy Bridge. It adds about 55 m of ascent and 62 m of descent, falling toward the 2 m course low. Full stations are at 10, 15, and 20 km, with water at 12.5 and 17.5 km; gels begin at 20 km, so fuel before the bridge and city turns accumulate.

## Kilometers 21.1 to 32

Along the Aussenalster, Stadtpark, City Nord, and Ohlsdorf, the GPX adds about 46 m of ascent and 42 m of descent in small rollers. Full stations are at 25 and 30 km, with water at 22.5 and 27.5 km; gel and cola are available from 25 km. Keep fueling regular and avoid surging over each short rise.

## Kilometers 32 to 42.2

The homeward route passes Eppendorfer Baum, Harvestehuder Weg, Dammtor, and Planten un Blomen. The GPX contains about 42 m of ascent and 34 m of descent before returning to 16 m at the finish. Water is at 32.5 and 37.5 km, with full gel and cola stations at 35 and 40 km; save the final move for Dammtor.

## Elevation checkpoints and how to read them

The organizer GPX calculates to 196 m of ascent and 196 m of descent, with a 2 m low point, a 39 m high point, and no net change. The opening 10 km contains about 53 m of ascent and the course high point; later climbing is spread across 55 m from 10 to 21.1 km, 46 m from halfway to 32 km, and 42 m in the final section.

## Aid stations and race-day logistics

Full stations are at 5 km intervals from 5 through 40 km, with water and ESN electrolyte drink, bananas from 10 km, gel from 20 km, and cola from 25 km. Water points sit at each 7.5 km midpoint through 37.5 km. Check your block for the Karolinenstrasse or Bei den Kirchhofen start. Use S1 or U3 to Sternschanze, U2 to Messehallen, U1 to Stephansplatz, or regional rail to Dammtor, then walk to the assigned pen. Bag drop uses the organizer kit bag in the Hamburg Messe Athletes Area.

## Practical pacing plan

Hold back on the Reeperbahn and Elbchaussee rollers, where the official GPX reaches the 39 m course high. Settle through the harbor landmarks and Kennedy Bridge, then keep effort even around the Aussenalster. Wind along the Elbe or rain on the turns should lower the split target. Cap effort through Eppendorf and Harvestehuder Weg. Push after Dammtor, when the route turns toward Planten un Blomen and the finish.

## Historical weather pattern

Historically, race-month temperatures in Hamburg have ranged from about 33.8°F to 68.7°F, with winds around 5.3 to 11.1 mph and measurable precipitation on 71% of sampled days. Conditions can change, so check the race-week forecast before you travel and again before race morning.
