## Why this race belongs on a competitive runner's shortlist

Berlin is a World Marathon Major with unmatched record history and a course organized around speed. The official page provides GPX, an elevation profile, and exact hydration locations. That evidence supports a true course guide rather than another claim that Berlin is flat.

## Course overview

The loop course starts and finishes near Tiergarten and the Brandenburg Gate, crossing broad central roads before returning through the city. Elevation change is limited, but turns, wind, road camber, and crowded pace groups still shape the race. Use the official GPX for the current edition.

## Miles 1 to 6

The opening roads are broad and fast. Stay in the assigned corral rhythm and avoid spending energy to reach a pace group that started far ahead. The 5-kilometer water point is the first useful checkpoint. Run the shortest safe line and keep breathing easier than goal effort.

## Miles 7 to 13

The official course lists support at 9, 12, 15, 17.5, and 20 kilometers. That density makes it easy to plan small, regular drinks. The profile stays subdued, so pace errors are mostly self-created. Keep effort even through turns and let the halfway split confirm rather than change the plan.

## Miles 14 to 20

Stations at 22.5, 25, 27.5, 30, and 32.5 kilometers structure the hardest section. Gel is listed at 27.5 kilometers. This is where crowded groups can begin to fragment. Hold the planned rhythm until 30 kilometers and avoid bridging every small gap.

## Miles 21 to 26.2

Late support appears around 34.5, 36, 38, and 40 kilometers. Use 36 kilometers as the first honest decision point. The Brandenburg Gate is close to the finish but not the line itself, so keep the final surge measured until you pass through and can see the remaining distance.

## Elevation checkpoints and how to read them

The official elevation PDF shows a low-relief course with small undulations rather than a major climb. For a numeric table, read elevations from the current organizer profile at 5-kilometer marks and label them as approximate if the chart lacks tabulated values. Do not mix profiles from different editions.

## Aid stations and race-day logistics

The 2026 race is September 27. The organizer lists water-only points at 5, 12, 17.5, 22.5, 27.5, 32.5, 34.5, 38, and 40 kilometers, with fuller stations at 9, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 36. Verify final products, start waves, transit, baggage, and cutoff rules.

## Practical pacing plan

Run the first 10 kilometers with restraint, settle through halfway, and keep the race boring until 30 kilometers. Berlin gives runners a chance to hold pace. It does not protect anyone from chasing an aggressive group too early.
